How to Liberate Yourself from Innate Pinoy Mentality
Many of us find ourselves bound by some inherent Pinoy attitudes which, inadvertently, have been controlling our lives: The first step is to spot them , the next is to put up a defense against them. 400 years of Spanish influence have left the Filipinos with both good and bad habits & philosophies in life. As luck would have it, most of the bad ones remain with us to this day. Here are alternative philosophies to espouse when you find yourself falling into any one of these deep–seated attitudes:
- Pinoy Mentality
Alternative Mindset - Ningas Cogon
Water runs dry. Love runs out. Passion dies down. It is a science. It takes deliberate effort to keep the love light burning and to keep yourself interested after you have committed yourself to it. If it’s just a hobby, let it go when you tired of it, but if it is your faith, family, or call of duty, make a conscious effort everyday to keep it burning. - Hiya which makes us afraid to fail and lose face and eventually makes us a poor loser
Do not be afraid or ashamed. Do your best in any endeavor and what other people think will not really matter. Failure can only make you a better person - Pakikisama which makes it hard for us to say no and puts other people in the center of our lives
Just learn to say NO. Your life should not be controlled by people around you. You are the captain of your own ship and people should respect you for y our decisions. - Utang na Loob which binds us to certain obligations to repay a debt or return a favor
This may be a virtue but not when it controls you. Place this virtue in the right perspective. There is a time and place for everything, debts can be repaid and favors returned, but you are not bound to please that person for life at the expense of your own freedom and happiness. - Kutob or psychic sensitivity
It is good to have a gut feel for a lot of things, but not if it makes you worry needlessly and places so much restraints in your life. Let go and you will find that there are things that are really beyond your control. You just have to have some faith that things will turn out well. - Bahala Na attitude which leads to the Manana Habit or procrastination and leaving things to chance
Let go but don’t overdo it. Some things do not really matter but some things do..like your faith, your family, your peace of mind, and your job, studies, or scope of responsibility. - Lamangan which leads to palusot, maka-isa and ingenuity in having one over the others
You may have outdone yourself and many others around you and it probably feels good since it is a display of your ingenuity. But try not to brag about it if it is something that does not make you a better person or does not make you or other people sleep better at night. - Crab Mentality
Recognizing that your peers may be better than you in some aspects is the first step in improving yourself. The more you push for their improvement and recognition, the more you can learn from them and bring yourself closer to your own goals. - Colonial Mentality which leads to inferiority complex
It is not true that your American peers have better opportunities because they have had better education and they can speak better English. And it is passé to think that American products are always better than Filipino made products. The sooner we rid ourselves of this mentality, the sooner we can move forward knowing that we are not made of lesser stuff..but that we have qualities that does not exist in other races and that we can only utilize our own points of advantage only if we learn to embrace the things which makes us unique.
Pork Pozzole
INGREDIENTS: PORK NECKBONES LOTS OF GARLIC, THE MORE GARLIC THE MORE DELICIOUS DRIED MEXICAN OR CALIFORNIA CHILIS SALT AND PEPPER ONE ONION CALIFORNIA OR MEXICAN BIG CORN IN THE CAN TOMATOES, CILANTRO, LEMONS PROCEDURES: BOIL PORK NECKBONES UNTIL MEAT IS TENDER ADD SALT AND PEPPER TO TASTE IN A SEPARATE POT, BOIL THE MEXICAN OR CALIFORNIA DRIED CHILIS..ABOUT 2 PIECES FOR 2 KILOS OF NECKBONES UNTIL THE CHILIS ARE TENDER WHEN CHILIS ARE TENDER,PIT THE CHILIS IN A BLENDER WITH LOTS OF PEELED GARLIC AND BLEND TIL ITS SMOOTH..PUT SOME WATER FROM THE WATER WHERE THE CHILIS WERE BOILED... THEN ADD THE MIXTURE TO THE SOUP AND THE CORN FROM THE CAN AND BOIL FOR A FEW MINUTES... WHEN SERVING IN A BOWL, ADD ON TOP OF THE SOUP CHOPPED ONIONS, CHOPPED CILANTRO AND FRESH LEMON JUICE.... PRESTO..YOU HAVE A POZZOLE..A SOUP..DELICIOUS..TRY THIS..
